In a serious accident, an injury to the back, spine, head, or brain can change life in an instant. The spinal cord and brain work collaboratively to conduct electrical and chemical signals throughout the body, maintaining vital functions and normal mobility. When injury interferes with communication, different functions of the limbs and body can be lost—and victims and their families must make various adjustments in the life ahead.

Understanding back and spinal injury

The spinal cord is a whitish bundle of nerve tissue extending from the base of the brain downward through bony vertebrae known as the spinal column. Damage to the spinal column results in the following types of injury:

  • Back injury. Vertebrae that form the spinal column can be broken, fractured, or crushed. Spongy disks between vertebrae can be pinched or ruptured—resulting in severe pain. While any injury—or repair—to the spinal column can damage the spinal cord, damage to the backbone does not always cause spinal cord injury. Back injury is sometimes disabling and painful, resulting in loss of mobility but not usually paralysis.
  • Spinal cord injury (SCI). SCI is damage to the nerve tissue of the spinal cord or the spinal nerves peripheral to the spinal column. The spinal cord does not have to be—and is usually not—severed in an SCI. SCI commonly occurs after a car accident, or other forceful impact or fall. While direct impact can damage the spinal cord, splinters of crushed vertebrae can slice, nick, compress, or bruise the spinal cord, causing usually irreparable inhibition of motor and sensory function below the injury site.
